For many people, the term “rehabilitation center” conjures up a number of negative images: bad food, bad lighting, sterile surroundings. Not this rehabilitation center!

A state-of-the-art facility that celebrated its grand opening in Leawood on Thursday aims to flip those images on their head. The new Healthcare Resort of Leawood, located at 143rd Street and Nall Avenue just south of St. Michael the Archangel, provides a posh environment for those recovering from major medical events, like strokes or cardiac issues. The facility has 24 assisted living residences and 70 skilled nursing rehabilitation suites geared for people who need short term medical care before returning to their normal lives.

Instead of a dingy cafeteria or lounge area with plastic furniture common in facilities of the past, the Healthcare Resort has plush accommodations and amenities, including concierge-style services and made-to-order dining options.

At a ribbon cutting event hosted by the Leawood Chamber of Commerce Thursday, Resort CEO Ryan Leiker told a crowd of more than 100 that the staff was committed to doing away with the “stigma” associated with more traditional rehab facilities.

“It’s the fusion of personalized hospitality and world-class healthcare. And we believe in that,” Leiker said.
